In-depth line editing is designed for manuscripts that need more intensive editorial attention than a standard copy edit. It works particularly well where the prose, character development, pacing, point of view or narrative flow need strengthening, and where you want detailed guidance alongside direct edits.

Your editor will work closely at both sentence and scene level, focusing on:

• Refining language and sentence structure to improve clarity, flow and readability while preserving your individual writing voice.
• Strengthening characterisation and emotional depth to create more engaging, believable characters and relationships.
• Improving pacing and narrative flow to maintain reader engagement and ensure the story progresses naturally.
• Developing scene structure and purpose to ensure each scene contributes meaningfully to the wider narrative.
• Reviewing point of view and tense to identify inconsistencies and maintain a cohesive narrative.
• Identifying continuity issues to ensure consistency in character details, events and story development.
• Refining backstory and exposition to ensure information is introduced naturally without interrupting the narrative.
• Strengthening foreshadowing and atmosphere to build tension, anticipation and emotional engagement.
• Enhancing description and sensory detail to create more immersive settings and bring scenes to life.

Edits are made directly to the manuscript using Tracked Changes, with detailed margin comments explaining suggestions and the reasoning behind them. You’ll also receive end-of-section feedback covering key strengths, areas for development, character arcs, pacing and narrative cohesion. The aim is not simply to improve the manuscript, but to help you understand why changes are being suggested and develop your craft as you work through the edit.

Throughout the process, you can discuss feedback with your editor by email or video call, brainstorm solutions and ask questions whenever you need to.
