Tiger Rock is a family-run resort nestled on the tropical island of Pangkor. Pangkor Island is, in many ways, a ‘mini’ Malaysia, representing all the cultures that make Malaysia such a vibrant place to be. There are temples and mosques, festivals and a lively market culture.
With two swimming pools, a library pavilion, and an abundance of secluded spots, Tiger Rock allows you to disconnect from busy city life and immerse yourself in the tranquility you need to find your story.
Where better to find your inspiration, unleash your creativity, and develop your manuscript?
All our workshops and activities are optional. Some days, you may just want to head off in search of inspiration. Walk along the beach or sit under a palm tree listening to the monkeys chatter. Head into the fishing town or explore the vibrant history of this tropical island.
You’ll be met at Kuala Lumpur airport by your hosts Amy Scott & Natasha Rajendram and taken by ferry to Pangkor island. Once there, you will have time to explore or unpack before relaxing with a light lunch. During this time, you will have an opportunity to meet your fellow writers, get to know your hosts a little better, and learn more about how Amy & Natasha intend to spend the week helping you grow as a writer. After receiving a few writing exercises to get you started, you can spend the rest of the afternoon writing, reading, or sitting down for a 1:1 with Amy or Natasha. When the glorious smells of the Malaysian cuisine pull you from your creative flow, dinner will be served.
Wake early to enjoy the sunrise or relax in the tranquility of the island before breakfast.
For the rest of the morning, Amy & Natasha invite you to join them for workshops on how to engage with your readers and create a captivating read. During this time, they will discuss how to use and adapt different genre rules to your writing style. How to be creative with different styles, and how established structures can simplify the writing process, allowing you to engage with your creativity.
At 1:30pm, we will take a break to enjoy the local cuisine and reflect on everything you have learned so far.
Continuing on from the morning session, Amy & Natasha will address some of the issues modern-day writers experience and how best to work your way through them.
From 6pm-8pm, you’ll have some free time to rest or write. Then, at 8pm, dinner is served.
Your third day on the island will start with breakfast and then onto the next workshop. Surrounded by a tropical paradise, Amy & Natasha will walk you through how to explore the different ways to use a narrative voice, look at how narrative and rhythm are closely entwined, and address any questions you have about creating a narrative voice.
Before lunch, you will have the opportunity to take part in a group feedback session, gaining and giving invaluable advice and suggestions to help you understand your readers and your own writing styles.
After lunch, you have the option to join Amy on a tour of the island or sit down with Natasha for a 1:1. The rest of the evening is then yours to have dinner, take some quiet time, or let the tropical night fall around you while you sip cocktails and engage with your fellow writers.
This is your day to take everything you’ve learned and either find a quiet spot to write alone or sit and write as a group. All the while, Amy & Natasha are on hand for 1:1 time. Throughout your writing day you can take little brainstorming breaks in one of the swimming pools underneath a jungle canopy or listen to the gentle waves on the beach, while the wonderful hosts of Tiger Rock indulge you with local cuisine.
Yes, you’re still here on this stunning tropical island, miles away from where the word ‘stress’ holds any meaning.
Following on from your writing day, this is the day to learn how to move from a first draft to a finished draft. Your experienced editors will show you how to perform a structural edit, incorporate feedback, and self-edit.After lunch, we will take a trip to Pangkor town. This is another opportunity to mix business with pleasure. While shopping and sightseeing, Amy & Natasha will show you how to see and describe the environment around you, increasing your ability to ‘show’ your story instead of ‘telling’ it.Returning to Tiger Rock, as a group, we will discuss how you can adapt what you have learned throughout the day to your own writing.Finish your day off with a feast of local Malaysian cuisine and a cocktail or a cup of tea.
After breakfast, we will spend the day taking part in group feedback sessions and 1:1s.
Then, at 5:30pm, as the day winds down, we will head out of the bay on a sunset boat tour around the island, where you can sit back with a cocktail and take in the beautiful scenery. With the moon lighting our way back to Tiger Rock, we’ll settle in for dinner and get ready for our last day.
For our last day, we want to give you the opportunity to create your own itinerary. Over the week, Amy & Natasha will have gotten to know you well and will have a good understanding of how you can further develop your writing craft. They will hold small group sessions and 1:1s discussing your path forward as a writer.
After a farewell dinner served under the trees and stars, learn the art of Henna and take away a lasting memory of your time on the Island of Pangkor.
Throughout your stay, we will make sure you are fully fed and fueled to learn. All meals are included, as well as a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There is no menu at Tiger Rock. Meals are based on what is fresh in the market on the day. Bavanni, the incredible chef at Tiger Rock uses all the fresh seafood and ingredients available on Pangkor to conjure up some of the best local food you will ever eat. Please tell us if you have special dietary requirements, e.g., vegetarian, vegan, lactose intolerant, gluten-free and to inform us of any food allergies or particular dislikes.
